Jason Packer • Specialist for Family Business Emerging Leaders

Built from
the inside out.

The name 1906 is not arbitrary. That is the year Hill & Markes was founded — the company my family would acquire, grow across four generations, and that I would ultimately lead and sell.

I specialize in supporting family business emerging leaders — the next-gen stepping up, the rising CEO, the successor figuring out who they are inside the system they inherited. I lived it. Now I walk that road alongside the people on it.

The Origin

Where I come
from.

In 1906, Amos Hill and Charlie Markes founded a small distribution company in upstate New York. Forty-one years later, my great-grandmother’s family acquired it. I grew up sorting mail in the office, cleaning trucks in the warehouse, absorbing what it meant to build something that lasts across generations.

I left — worked on Capitol Hill, in political fundraising, earned an MBA — and came back because I chose to. I became CEO, led 175 people through cultural transformation, and earned national recognition for what we built together.

Then came the sale: negotiating the exit of a 115-year-old, fourth-generation business to private equity at four times the industry valuation. The right decision — and the start of a new chapter. Today I lead Stride Family Business Alliance and consult with JPB Consulting Group, focused on one audience: family business emerging leaders. The next-gen stepping up. The successor weighing the seat. The rising CEO trying to figure out who they are inside the system they inherited. I lived that road. Now I walk it with the people on it.

The Work

How I serve
emerging leaders.

01
Ownership & Succession
Helping ownership groups work through what comes next — whether that’s a transfer to the next generation, a sale, or something in between. I’ve sat at that table as the person making the decision. I know what the real questions are, and I know they’re rarely the ones on the agenda.
02
Family Governance
Working with families to build the structures that let them make decisions together — family councils, shareholder agreements, communication protocols, and the rules of engagement that prevent the small things from becoming the big things. Grounded in Bowen family systems theory and FFI-certified practice.
03
Peer Community & Facilitation
Leading peer groups and retreats for family business owners — senior generation, next gen, and women in family enterprise. Through Stride Family Business Alliance, I build the rooms where family business leaders can be honest about what they’re actually dealing with.

Conversational AI

Ask Jason.

Not a chatbot. A conversation with an AI trained on my voice, my frameworks, and my experience. Ask about succession, governance, selling, next-gen readiness — whatever is actually on your mind.

Try asking:
I’ve spent my career inside family businesses — as a kid, as an employee, as CEO, and now as an advisor. Whatever is on your mind, I’ve probably seen a version of it. What’s going on?
